From quite a few spots on the south side you have good views of the city skyscrapers including the curved Google Tower.

There are very nice trees lining the waters, Wildflowers were in full bloom during our recent visit, adding a nice touch for Spring visits.

You'll see good birdlife, fish, turtles, a snake or two and even bats under Congress Ave.

There are recreational grounds and parks on both sides, plenty of bench seating, fishing spots. Parking is not as easy at is was 20 years ago but with some research you can find designated parking in various locations on both sides of the lake. The Ann and Roy Butler Trail that circles the Colorado River and Lady Bird Lake between MoPac (west) and Pleasant Valley Road (east), providing approximately 10 miles of mostly shoreline trails for walkers, joggers and bikers in need of green and recreational space in downtown Austin. Unfortunately due to some reconstruction there is scaffolding all around the building so it is not, currently, very picturesque and despite that fact and the somewhat disappointing tour it is well worth a visit and when I return I will make it a point to visit again and see things I missed previously (& hopefully get a more in-depth tour) The grounds are gorgeous and are something of a "park" for the history of the state and well worth taking a long visit wandering around and seeing the monuments. The building is historic and beautiful but, again, I just wish there had been more concentration in the tour of those points and visiting more of the historic parts than what we got (granted time constraints are an issue). Instead too much is made of the addition (I would much rather have seen more of the earlier history). There is a tremendous amount of historic art work and much of that is mentioned in the tour but there is so much more that is not included. Essentially the tour was of how wonderful Texas history is and how it is represented in the building (not demeaning that but there should have been more).

Granted part of the issue was that the legislature was in session so we were not allowed into the House or Senate chamber and the fact that there must have been a thousand plus school children all over/everywhere but most of the historic areas are off limits or at least not included in the tour.
